Our Journey

Rooted in heritage. Growing with purpose

At Sandhills Family Heritage Association, our story is deeply tied to the land, the people, and the legacy of the Sandhills region of North Carolina. What started as a grassroots movement has grown into a vibrant community organization committed to honoring the past, serving the present, and building for the future.

Here’s a look at where we’ve been—and where we’re going.

1998 — A Vision Takes Root

SFHA is incorporated, marking the beginning of a community-led effort to preserve land, culture, and connections among descendants of African-American families in the Sandhills.

2001 — Mission Made Official

We received our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, formalizing our commitment to addressing land loss, preserving African-American history, and promoting economic self-sufficiency.

2005 — A Gift and a Challenge

SFHA is entrusted with the Historic Spring Lake Civic Center building, along with the community’s charge to restore it as a place of gathering, celebration, and heritage.

2018 — Breathing New Life

The Civic Center Renovation Project begins, reviving the space while renewing our commitment to serve as a hub for culture, conversation, and community progress.

2019–Present — Staying Rooted, Reaching Forward

Through programs like HealthWise, the Farmers & Heritage Market, youth engagement, land preservation, and historical tours, SFHA continues its mission—meeting people where they are, honoring their stories, and working toward a stronger future for all.

In December 2021, SFHA was entrusted with the care of Deerfield Cemetery, a historic burial ground located on the former McDiarmid plantation. While originally used as a resting place for enslaved individuals, the cemetery continued to serve the African American community after emancipation. The land was graciously gifted to SFHA by Brian Armstrong, whose contribution ensures the preservation of this sacred ground. Its restoration and protection remain central to our mission to preserve legacy, honor memory, and uphold the dignity of those laid to rest there.

We are also in the final phase of the Historic Civic Center renovation project. Though much has been accomplished, significant work remains to complete the building and grounds. We press forward—because history deserves a home, and community deserves a place to gather, grow, and be inspired.

Be Part of the Journey

Our story is still unfolding—and you can be part of it. Whether it’s helping complete the final phase of the Civic Center renovation, supporting the restoration of Deerfield Cemetery, or volunteering at a market or youth event, your time, talent, and contributions make a lasting difference.
