Food       Tradition      Fellowship

Sunny skies, a gentle breeze, and temperatures in the 70s provided the perfect setting as the Sandhills Family Heritage Association gathered on September 26 for our 2026 Heritage Luncheon and the close of another Farmers & Heritage Market season.

This year’s luncheon offered a little twist on tradition. Instead of the variety of meats often associated with our heritage meals, fish took center stage. Whiting was fried outdoors in an old cast-iron pot reminiscent of those once used during hog-killing time on small family farms. Rev. Hattie Graham and Mr. Lorenzo Doctor, our neighbors and supporters from Spring Lake Memorial Baptist Church, kept the fish coming throughout the afternoon.

The meal was rounded out with green beans, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, hushpuppies and traditional white loaf bread, followed by chocolate cake, zucchini bread, coconut cake, and dump cake for dessert.

The JAM Session youth band, led by Mr. Ken Hill, treated guests to an impressive performance. The young musicians, ages 14–17, have only been playing together since May 2026—a fact that was hard to believe after hearing them perform.

The Sandhills Sankofa Dancing Grannies also returned to share their energy, movement and longstanding support of SFHA.We extend special thanks to Doris and Densie Lucas and the entire Sankofa group for their enduring commitment to the Association. Several members also work alongside Doris in SFHA’s HealthWise outreach activities.

Evelyn Frett of Frett Not Entertainment, assisted by SFHA Board Member Leon Dockery, brought the sounds of heritage drumming to the celebration.
