Across North Carolina’s Sandhills, pieces of African American history remain tucked away in church registers, estate papers, census records, newspapers, family collections, cemeteries, and community memories

Echoes from the Sandhills brings together the voices of ordinary people whose lives helped shape the communities of Cumberland, Harnett, Lee, and Moore Counties. Through family histories, historical records, community memories, and untold stories, these pages reconnect us with a past that continues to influence the present.

They Had Names

Through records created before and around emancipation, They Had Names seeks to restore names and pieces of identity to African Americans whose lives are too often hidden behind numbers, property descriptions, and the names of those who enslaved them.
